In honor of our Foundation Day on October 24 we are sharing stories from and/or about our amazing SSND Sisters. I loved the mission and charism of my congregation — the Sisters of St. Joseph — from the first moment I read it.

The way of life of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles is rooted in the Gospel, the Church, and the spirituality of Carmel as lived out through the charism of our foundress, Venerable Mother Maria Luisa Josefa of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This charism is Love, which continues to manifest itself today in the sisters’ joyful service of God and his people.

In a holistic approach to persons we encourage them to recognise and use their gifts and talents. The Sisters of Life are a contemplative/active Roman Catholic community of women religious, who profess the three traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and a fourth vow to protect and enhance the sacredness of human life. In a special way, our Charism of love directs our love and concern to God’s poor among us. Reaching out to find a way to spend time with Sisters gives the opportunity to see firsthand the joy of a life dedicated to Jesus, imitating Him in poverty, chastity and obedience. The spirit of simplicity shown by loving submission, charity and mortification is the distinctive spirit which permeates our lives and all that we do as we strive to fulfill the mission entrusted to us by the Church. A charism can only reflect back to us one facet of God’s perfection, yet even that facet itself is never exhausted.

In all that we do, we go to Jesus through Mary. They can be studied independently or in a group, in any order and at your own pace. My dilemma was this: If I embrace the charism within me and give my life to this mission, will I spend my whole life simply passing it on to others and never really living it?
