The country's participation in London marked its ninth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 1972 Summer Olympics. The head of Somalia’s National Olympic Committee confirmed to the BBC that she had died but did not say how.

The delegation included one short-distance sprinter and one long-distance runner: Mohamed Hassan Mohamed and Zamzam Mohamed Farah.
